When it comes to Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), most people prefer to receive a push notification on their phone instead of typing in a code. If your MFA default sign-in method is set to code instead of push, here's how you can change it.
- In a browser, navigate to myprofile.microsoft.com.
- Sign in. Then, under Security info, click Update Info. (If it takes a long time to load this page, try refreshing it.)
- Next to Default sign-in method, click Change. (In the screenshot below, MFA is already correctly set to push notification.)
- A pop-up window will appear. Click the dropdown and select your desired method.
- Depending on what you have set up and your organization's policies, you may have these options:
- Call: That will call the number you set up. An automated voice will read a code to you that you will enter when prompted.
- Text: That will send a text to the number you set up. You will need to enter when prompted.
- Notification: That will send a push notification to your phone. Tap Approve if it's you. Tap Reject if you weren't doing anything to prompt an MFA notification (consider opening a Help Desk ticket if this happens in case your account is compromised).
- Code: A constantly changing code will always show up in your authenticator app. You will need to enter it when prompted (keep in mind that the code expires and changes frequently).
- Depending on what you have set up and your organization's policies, you may have these options:
- If the dropdown option for "Microsoft Authenticator - notification" doesn't show up, please click the x at the top right of the pop-up window, then follow steps 2-10 in this guide. After setting up MFA again, you should have the option to select "Microsoft Authenticator - notification."
