If you're brand new to the world of Windows... welcome! Here's a basic overview of what you'll need to get started.
How to log in
- If you're the last person who logged into the computer, you'll already see your username populated. From there, simply type your password into the password field and then press Enter.
- If you're not the last person who logged into the computer (i.e. an administrator or another user logged in), you won't see your username already populated.
- At the bottom left of the logon screen, click Other User.
- Type in your full work email address into the username field.
- Then type your password into the password field and press Enter.
How to navigate the desktop
In the screenshot above, you'll see the following items:
- At the bottom of your screen is the taskbar. This can be moved to the left, right, or top of your screen depending on your preference. You can pin frequently used apps to your taskbar. Additionally, you will see open programs appear in your taskbar.
- At the bottom left of the screen is your Windows Start Menu, where you can access all your apps and settings. You can access your Power options from this menu in order to restart or shut down your system. Additionally, you can click your Profile icon and select to sign out or lock your screen when you step away from your computer for a short period of time. This helps protect your data from anyone who may step in while you're away.
- Next to the Start Menu, you'll see the Search icon. You can click this and start typing an app name or file name to search for it. Alternatively, you can open the Start Menu and do the same thing.
- The file folder icon you see in the taskbar is File Explorer. Use this app to navigate to different local folders and files, as well as folders and files that are located on the network drives (aka shared drives). We typically drop shortcuts to your network drives on your Desktop, but you can also find them in File Explorer by clicking This PC on the left sidebar menu.
- On the very right of the taskbar, there is an "invisible" sliver of space to the right of the notification icon. If you click that, all app windows will be minimized so you can see your Desktop. (Pro Tip: The keyboard shortcut to show Desktop is Windows key + D.)
