Pause, breathe, and perform the initial checks:
First thing to do is hold the power button down for 1 minute and then try to power it back on. If that doesn't work, please follow the below guide.
- Check to see if it’s even getting electricity to it.
- If it’s a laptop, should there be any type of light turning on in the original charger? If so, does that light turn on when you plug it in?
- If it’s a desktop, is there an LED light on the surge protector that turns on?
- Give it a short break from electricity to try to reset it.
- Unplug all the cords (power, USB, mice, etc)
- Take out the battery (if this computer is a laptop model and if the laptop easily pops out, you should not have to unscrew anything). If it's a laptop without an easily-removed battery, after unplugging everything from it, hold the power button down for 30 seconds. (For Microsoft Surface machines, hold the power button down for a full 60 seconds.)
- Wait about a minute
- Insert the battery again (again only if laptop of course)
- Plug in and try to power on.
- Be to unplug and re-plug the power cord in the middle if there’s a middle connection.
If that didn't work, run a hardware diagnostic:
Note: Sometimes these instructions will vary per computer.
Dell Computers
- Turn the computer off.
- Power it back on again and from the instant you turn it on, tap the F12 key along the top of the keyboard for up to 10 seconds, at least THREE times per second, until a Dell Boot manager window appears.
- Select the Diagnostics option and follow the onscreen instructions.
- Take a picture or write down any results or error codes.
- If you get an advanced diagnostic option, please choose that, too.
HP Computers
- Turn the computer off.
- Power it back on, immediately after pressing the power on, rapidly and repeatedly press the F2 to bring up HP diagnostics.
- Choose the "Extensive System Test".
- Take a picture or write down any results or error codes.
If THAT didn't work...
We got you. Submit a Help Desk ticket. Attach the picture or send us the error codes and give us as much detail as possible.
